The team “Aquatic Resources Technology” representing the Aquatic Resources Technology Degree Programme of  Uva wellassa University  won the 2nd place in IOBSL Inter University Biology Challenge 2020 under the theme of “Sustainable solutions to face the challenges of the COVID-l9 crisis and beyond”. The competition was organized by the Institute of Biology Sri Lanka (IOBSL). The winning team comprised of four undergraduates; Ms. W.M.J.Chethana Tissera-Team leader (4th year), Ms. G.A.J. Sandamali (4th year), Ms. W.M.P. Umanga Weerasingha (3rd year) and Mr.H.M. Sasindu Wijerathne(2nd year) of Aquatic Resources Technology Degree Programme. The team achieved the 2nd place by competing with 64 teams from different universities in Sri

Professor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera has been re-appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the UvaWellassa University of Sri Lanka by His Excellency, The President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Professor Ratnasekera assumed duties as the Vice Chancellor of UWU for next 3 years on his birthday, November 04, 2020.

Professional Journey of Professor Ratnasekera.

Professor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera has had his primary education at AgrabodhiVidyalaya, Kanthale, and secondary education at Nalanda College, Colombo. Professor Ratnasekera has graduated from People’s Friendship University, Moscow, Russia with an honors degree in Chemistry in 1988. Subsequently, in 1993, he has obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the same university.

Professor Ratnasekera has joined the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer in August 1996, and was promoted to the post of Professor in Chemistry in 2018. He has been the Head of the Department of Physical Sciences of Rajarata University for a period of three years (1996-1999), and the Dean of Faculty of Applied Sciences for a period of six years (1999-2005).

Professor Ratnasekera has served in three World Bank funded higher education and school education projects (i.e. IRQUE, HETC and TSEP) in different capacities, such as Consultant on Quality Assurance, Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist, Deputy Project Director and Project Director. Professor Ratnasekera was appointed to the Post of Vice Chancellor of UvaWellassa University by His Excellency the President, in January, 2017 and holds that position to date.

Thus, he has a wide knowledge and hands-on experience on the Sri Lankan higher education and school education systems.

His research interests are in the fields of renewable energy sources, environmental chemistry, theoretical chemistry, quality assurance in higher education, science education etc. He was awarded the Presidential Award for Scientific Publications published in the year 2016, and the National Research Council (NRC) Merit Award for Scientific Research published in the year 2017.

Professor Ratnasekera has contributed immensely for development of quality assurance activities in the Sri Lankan University sector. He has served as a Member of the Standing Committee on Quality Assurance, University Grants Commission (UGC) for several years, and also served as an International Reviewer in external quality assessments in a number of universities in Bangladesh.

From March 2013 to February 2015, he has served as a Member of Standing Committee on General Education, National Education Commission (NEC), and from has been serving as a Member of Standing Committee on Higher Education, National Education Commission (NEC) from 2017 to date.

Professor Ratnasekera has been a trainer and a resource person in numerous training programs and workshops. He is also well known as a freelance writer for newspapers, author and a translator.

Ms. Chamodi Wewelwala has won the 3rd place at “THE QUIZIST” online quiz game which was organized by Association of Food Science and Technology, University of Sri Jayawardanapura held on 12th September 2020.

Over 50 undergraduates were participated for the 1st round representing many state universities of the country. After 3 successful rounds Ms. Chamodi Wewalwala secures the 3rd place.

Ms. Chamodi Wewelwala (UWU/EAG/16/033) is a 4th year student who is doing Food Processing Technology as her majoring BScHons. (Export Agriculture) degree programme in the Department of Export Agriculture, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka.

As per the evaluation made by an Expertise Panel recommended by the Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, Mr. E.C.N. Rathnapala (UWU/ANS/15/038) was selected for receiving a Faculty Award with respect to the Academic Year 2018/2019 representingthe Bachelor of Animal Science Honours degree programme.

The evaluation was conducted based on both academic performance and extra-curricular activities. To be qualified for the award, the candidates should have obtained at least 70% of the total marks.

The Faculty congratulates to Mr. Rathnapala for his achievement.

UWU Organised Two Tree Planting Programmes on 26.11.2020 & 03.12.2020

Tree planting program has been organized due to remove trees for constructing of Badulla- Chenkaladi road. District Forest Office, Badulla supported to organize the program and location is Landslide area of the University.  Said area will be developed as Medicinal Park, Fruit Garden and Leisure Park.   Vice Chancellor , District Forest Officer, Dean Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, Dean Faculty of Applied Sciences, Registrar, Bursar, Engineer Project-Road, Deputy Registrar/ General Administration, Officials from District Forest Office, Official from Road Project, Land Supervisor of the University and Supervisor Manpower Service were participated the program on 26.11.2020

District Secretariat has organized to plant 37000 trees in Badulla district and 500 trees in landslide area of the University premises.  Techno Society of the University, Deputy Registrar/ General Administration and Assistant Network Manager were participated the program on 03.12.2020
